Best Reading Lamps For Living Room: Styles, Placement And Buying Tips
Most lamp guides tell you to pick something that matches your decor and leave it there. That advice is useless for reading, because whether a lamp works for reading has almost nothing to do with how it looks and almost everything to do with one number: how high the bottom edge of its shade sits off the floor.
To write this guide we pulled the published specifications for 100 lamps in our own lamps and lights collection and sorted them by type, height, wattage and price. A few things came out of that exercise that we had not expected, including the fact that two of our most different looking products do almost exactly the same optical job. What follows is built on those numbers rather than on general styling advice.
What height should a reading lamp be in a living room?
The bottom edge of the lampshade should sit at or just above your eye level when seated, which for most adults on a standard sofa lands between 44 and 48 inches from the floor. Below that, light pools on your lap instead of the page. Above it, you see the bulb directly and get glare.
That 44 to 48 inch figure comes from adding a typical sofa seat height of 16 to 18 inches to a seated eye height of roughly 28 to 31 inches for an adult. Treat it as a working range, not a precise measurement, and adjust it if your sofa is unusually low or if the person reading is much taller or shorter than average.
The measurement that decides everything
Here is what we found when we checked the actual published dimensions across the range.
| Lamp configuration | Total height | Approximate shade bottom | Relative to seated eye level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor lamp, tall | 60 inches | Around 46 inches | Level with the eye |
| Floor lamp, standard | 48 inches | Around 34 inches | Well below the eye |
| Table lamp on a side table | 24 inches plus a 22 inch table | Around 34 inches | Well below the eye |
Shade bottom figures assume a conical shade of roughly 12 to 14 inches on the floor lamps and 10 inches on the table lamp, measured down from the stated overall height.
The result that surprised us: a 48 inch floor lamp and a 24 inch table lamp sitting on an ordinary side table land at virtually the same shade height. Optically they are doing the same thing. They differ in light spread and in whether you need a side table at all, but not in the fundamental geometry. Since floor lamps in the range start at ₹7,599 and table lamps top out at ₹4,499, that is a meaningful discovery if you were assuming the more expensive piece automatically reads better.
The genuinely different configuration is the 60 inch floor lamp. It is the only one that puts the shade opening at seated eye level, which is exactly what you want for reading because the light then falls onto the page from above and slightly behind. It is also the only one where placement is not optional.
Where to place a reading lamp in a living room
Placement follows directly from the height. There are two rules and they are not interchangeable.
A 60 inch floor lamp goes behind your shoulder. Because the shade opening sits at eye level, putting one of these in front of you or directly across the seating group means looking straight into the light source. Set it just behind and to one side of where you actually sit, ideally on your non dominant side so your writing or page turning hand does not throw a shadow across the page. In a typical three seater arrangement that usually means the far corner of the sofa, not the middle of the wall.
Achille Wooden Floor Lamp

A 48 inch floor lamp or a table lamp goes beside you. These sit below eye level, so you are looking down onto the shade rather than into it and glare stops being an issue from any angle. The tradeoff is a smaller, lower light pool. Put them level with your shoulder or slightly forward, close enough that the light reaches the book rather than the arm of the sofa.
Solid Wood Cedar White Fabric Lampshade Table Lamp

One practical constraint that catches people out: both floor lamp types in our range ship with a 2 metre or 2.5 metre wire and a foot switch. A reading corner more than two metres from a socket needs either an extension or a rethink of where the seating goes. Worth checking before you order rather than after.
Which style of lamp suits which reading habit
Style here means function first. The decorative differences follow from it.
Tall floor lamps with jute or fabric shades suit long sessions in a fixed chair. The fabric diffuses the light, softening the edges of the pool so the contrast between the lit page and the dark room is less tiring over an hour or two. This is the closest thing in the range to a dedicated reading lamp, and it is the category where the floor lamp collection is deepest, with 42 of the 100 lamps we analysed falling into this group.
Table lamps suit shorter, more casual reading, the kind that happens with a cup of tea and a magazine rather than a novel you are two hundred pages into. They need a surface, so factor a side table into the cost if you do not already have one. The table lamp collection runs from ₹2,999 to ₹4,499, which makes the lamp itself the cheaper half of that pairing.
Wall lights free up floor and table space entirely, which matters in a smaller hall. The catch is that they are fixed once installed, so you are committing to one reading position permanently. Something like the Solid Sol Wall Light works well flanking a sofa where the layout is settled and unlikely to change.
Ceiling and hanging lights are ambient, not task lighting. They light the room, not the page. Useful as the background layer that keeps the contrast comfortable, but a reading corner lit only from the ceiling puts your own head between the light and your book.
What the catalogue prices actually tell you
Sorting all 100 lamps by price produced a cleaner pattern than we expected.
| Category | Count | Price range | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Table lamps | 15 | ₹2,999 to ₹4,499 | ₹3,799 |
| Wall lights | 19 | ₹2,099 to ₹5,299 | ₹4,099 |
| Hanging and ceiling lights | 24 | ₹3,299 to ₹13,899 | ₹7,949 |
| Floor lamps | 42 | ₹7,599 to ₹14,499 | ₹11,249 |
The finding worth acting on is that table lamps and floor lamps do not overlap in price at all. The most expensive table lamp in the range sits ₹3,100 below the cheapest floor lamp. So the choice between them is not a matter of picking a better or worse option within a budget band. It is a category level decision you make first, and then you choose within that category.
Table lamp pricing is also remarkably tight, a spread of only ₹1,500 across fifteen products. Practically, that means once you have decided on a table lamp, price is not a useful way to narrow the field. Shade material and size are.
Prices above were recorded during a festive promotion and move with sale cycles, so treat them as a snapshot of the relationships between categories rather than a fixed price list.
The specification detail nobody mentions
Checking the individual product pages turned up something consistent across the entire range: every lamp we looked at is specified at 3000K warm white, and every one uses an E27 screw type holder.
Warm white at 3000K is the right choice for a living room in the evening. It is a relaxed, yellowish light that suits winding down. But it is not what most people find best for concentrated reading over a long stretch, where a neutral tone closer to 4000K holds attention better and renders text with slightly more contrast.
The useful part is that the E27 holder is a standard screw fitting, so the bulb is not a permanent decision. If you read for an hour before bed, keep the warm bulb. If your reading corner doubles as the place you go through work documents on a Sunday, a neutral white E27 bulb costs very little and changes the character of the light completely. Being able to say that honestly is more useful than pretending one colour temperature suits every use.
Two more specification points from the product pages worth knowing before you order:
Floor lamps in the range are rated for a 12W LED and table lamps for a 9W LED. In practical terms that is roughly 1000 to 1100 lumens versus around 800, which is why the floor lamp throws a wider pool. Both are adequate for reading at close range; the floor lamp simply lights more of the surrounding area as well.
Bulb inclusion varies. The table lamps we checked ship with the bulb included, while most floor lamps do not. It is a small thing that turns into an annoying evening if you unbox a floor lamp expecting to use it immediately.
Layering: why one lamp is rarely enough
A single bright lamp in a dark room creates a hard contrast between the lit page and everything around it, and your eyes work harder adjusting between the two every time you look up. The fix is not a brighter reading lamp. It is a second, dimmer light source somewhere else in the room, which could be a wall light, a hanging lamp, or even a low table lamp on a console across the space.
This connects to how the rest of the room is arranged. If you have already worked out your seating proportions using the approach in our coffee table buying guide, you will find that the same corners that end up unoccupied by furniture are usually the right places for that secondary light. Our broader guide to setting up a living room covers how the pieces fit together if you are still working out the overall layout.
Our picks for a living room reading corner
These are drawn from the products whose full specifications we verified while researching this piece, chosen for what the numbers say rather than for what photographs well.
| Product | Height | Best for | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Druid Wooden Floor Lamp | 60 inches | Long reading sessions in a fixed chair | Puts the shade at seated eye level, the only configuration that lights the page from above and behind. Conical jute shade diffuses well. Needs to go behind your shoulder |
| Fisher Wooden Floor Lamp | 60 inches | The same job in a narrower corner | Same height as the Druid but a 10 by 14 inch footprint rather than 12 by 12, which is easier to fit tight against a sofa arm |
| Noel Wooden Floor Lamp | 48 inches | Reading beside you, no side table needed | Sits below eye level so glare is a non issue from any seat in the room. Good where the reading spot moves around |
| Achille Wooden Table Lamp | 24 inches | Casual reading where a side table already exists | Reaches nearly the same shade height as the Noel for a fraction of the price. Bulb included, hexagonal jute shade |
| Solid Sol Wall Light | Wall mounted | Small halls with a settled layout | Frees the floor entirely. Fixed position, so only worth it once you are sure the sofa is staying put |
Every lamp in the full lamps and lights range is built on a solid wood base, ships free across India and carries our lifetime termite warranty. Assembly on the floor lamps is straightforward and self assembly is what we recommend, though free assembly is available in most metros.
How we put this guide together
The height, wattage, colour temperature, switch type and bulb inclusion figures in this article come from the published specification tables on our own product pages, not from general lighting guidance. The price analysis covers 100 of the 300 products listed in our lamps and lights collection, which is the first page of that catalogue sorted by our default ordering, so it is a sample rather than the complete range.
The seated eye height range is an estimate built from standard sofa seat heights and adult sitting eye height, and the shade bottom figures are calculated from overall height minus an approximate shade depth rather than measured directly. We have flagged those as estimates where they appear because the distinction matters if you are planning a room around them.
Saraf Furniture has been making solid wood furniture in India for over four decades. We source our own timber, season and cut it in our own facility and finish every piece in house, which is also why we have access to the specification detail this article is built on.
Frequently Asked Questions
What height should a reading lamp be for a living room sofa?
The bottom of the lampshade should sit between 44 and 48 inches from the floor, which is roughly eye level for an adult seated on a standard sofa. A 60 inch floor lamp achieves this. Shorter lamps sit below eye level, which is still usable but produces a smaller light pool.
Is a floor lamp or a table lamp better for reading?
A 60 inch floor lamp is better for sustained reading because it is the only common configuration that puts light on the page from above and behind. A table lamp on a side table reaches roughly the same height as a 48 inch floor lamp, so for casual reading the two perform similarly at very different prices.
Where should a reading lamp be placed in a living room?
Tall floor lamps belong just behind and to one side of the reader, ideally on the non dominant side so the reading hand does not cast a shadow. Shorter floor lamps and table lamps belong beside the reader, level with or slightly forward of the shoulder.
What wattage is right for a reading lamp?
A 12W LED, roughly 1000 to 1100 lumens, is comfortable for a floor lamp used for reading. A 9W LED at around 800 lumens is sufficient for a table lamp used at closer range. Brightness alone does not solve poor placement.
Is warm white or cool white better for reading?
Warm white at 3000K suits evening leisure reading in a living room. For longer or more concentrated reading, a neutral white nearer 4000K is usually easier on the eyes. Lamps with E27 screw holders let you switch between the two by changing the bulb.
Do I need more than one light in a reading corner?
Usually yes. A single bright lamp in an otherwise dark room creates a harsh contrast that tires the eyes over time. A second, dimmer source elsewhere in the room, such as a wall light or hanging lamp, makes extended reading noticeably more comfortable.
Can a wall light work as a reading lamp?
Yes, provided it is mounted so the light falls at shoulder height or above where you sit. The limitation is permanence. Once installed it commits you to reading in one spot, so it suits settled layouts rather than rooms you still rearrange.
